New Year’s Resolutions – Have you made yours?

Christmas  Day 2019 is a part of history and many people are looking forward to celebrating the arrival of the New 2020 Year. Along with the celebrations come reflections on the past year. What should I have done better? How can I change for the better during 2020?  What is most important to me and what should my accomplishments be during the coming 365 days?

These thoughts are part of how New Year’s Resolutions get their beginnings.

History reveals that the custom of making New Year’s resolutions has been around for thousands of years. It is thought that the Babylonians were the first people to make New Year’s resolutions – more than 4,000 years ago.

The Babylonians would hold a 12-day feast during which they would crown a new king or reaffirm loyalty to their reigning king. Promises were made by the people to pay their debts and return borrowed objects. It was these promises that were the forerunners of New Year’s resolutions.

Julius Caesar, emperor of Rome,  is the man who set January 1st as the beginning of the new year in 46 B.C. January, the first month of the year, was named for Janus, the two-faced god whose spirit inhabited doorways and arches.
