With twenty-five years of touring the United States during the early fall, Heinrich Keipp and Antje Glindemann were driving eastbound on I-90 when Keipp, who was consulting a Rand-McNally Atlas, noticed the Minnesota city named Fulda. Looking at his wife, he said, “I want to go there.” With a quick detour off of I-90, heading north on US Highway 59, the couple parked their rental vehicle at Fulda’s Depot and began a walking tour of the city.
They stopped at the office of the Fulda Free Press and introduced themselves to owner and editor, Jerry Johnson. Keipp explained that he had not known about Fulda, Minnesota, but he and his wife lived at Offenbach, Germany, and were interested in learning more about the history of the Minnesota city. Offenbach is only 65 miles from Fulda, Germany, where the Glindemann’s daughter and her family reside. Her son and his family live 45 miles in the opposite direction.
Married for thirty years, Keipp and Glindemann stated that they take time each fall to visit the United States. To this date, they have been in 48 states and seen many beautiful and breathtaking landscapes. “We have had at least one foot in all of the lower 48 states and in Alaska and Canada,” Glindemann explained. “But we have not yet visitied Hawaii. I am interested in nature and have been so very impressed with the national parks and their beauty. When we travel, we talk between us and make a plan, but you never know what’s tomorrow.”
