On Wednesday afternoon students in Mrs. Lee’s and Mrs. Kramer’s second grade class invited their mom or their dad or a good friend to come to school and help them in creating a masterpiece… an edible gingerbread house.
There are many kits out their to be purchased with all the ingredients needed and instructions on how to complete the perfect gingerbread house.
But the second grade students put a different twist on creating their masterpieces. And imagination was a big key to success.
They began a while back when they were each asked to bring two items to school to share and use to make gingerbread houses. No one was assigned any certain item, and yet, the variety of candies and frosting was amazing. There were M & M’s, red rope licorice, red hots, gum drops, gummy bears, chocolate bars, marshmallows, coconut, chocolate chips (big and small), pretzels, and of course candy canes.
Students had to use their own imagination (and that of their parent) to create their own version of the gingerbread house.
Empty milk cartons were used as the base of the house. Frosting was used as glue to make the graham cracker walls stand strait and roof stay in place.
More frosting was added to each piece of candy to make shingles on the roof out of pretzels, windows, doors and sidewalks out of chocolate bars and lined with gum drops. Coconut was used as snowy grass and red hots and candy canes as Christmas decorations on the houses.
But a gingerbread house isn’t done until you add the Christmas tree. Waffle cones were frosted green and decorated with all sorts of candies and red rope licorice for garland.
The students were very proud of their creations and very happy to take them home with them (to eat of course)!
As one student put it, “This is The Best Day Ever”!
It was, in fact, a very fun time for all.
