Patriots, Coyotes set to tangle Thursday

With a nice-sized roster of 30 varsity players — six seniors, five juniors, 13 sophomores and six freshmen — the 2019 edition of the Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda Coyotes is set to begin game action this week, hosting the Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots Thursday (August 29) at Alex Fisher Field in Fulda.

The Coyotes have completed two full weeks of practice, including a scrimmage (last Saturday, the 24th) in Heron Lake versus that same H-BC squad.

“Our scrimmage went well,” summed up HL-O / Fulda co-head coach and offensive coordinator Jonathon Curry. “Everyone came out healthy which is the number one thing. Each team made some big plays, both on offense and defense. It was competitive and should set up a fun game on Thursday night.”

Curry mentioned that this week’s practices would be important in the team’s continued preparation.

“This week of practice is big,” he said. “We need to fix some of our mistakes from the scrimmage and we know that they will be doing the same.”

H-BC defeated the Coyotes at Hills last fall (Game 5 at Hills, September 28, 62-8) one week after HL-O / Fulda had earned a 48-42 overtime victory over Renville County West in HL-O’s Homecoming Game at Heron Lake.

The Patriots, according to Curry, return three explosive all-purpose players in Gavin Wysong (#2, junior quarterback / linebacker), Tyson Bork (#21, junior halfback / wide receiver / defensive back) and Jax Wysong (# 13, senior wide receiver, halfback, defensive end).
