Thursday, January 15, 1959

Fulda defeats Slayton in a 72-71 overtime battle at home. Leading scorers were Overlees, Lemberg and Freetly. The Raiders will take on the Wildcats in Slayton with the winner taking home the “Goat” later in the season.

A Faculty against Seniors basketball game will be played on Friday, January 16th, at the High School.

A fire of undetermined origin, gutted the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Deuschle near Avoca Friday afternoon. The family lost all their personal belongings.

Alex Madson is hospitalized at Springfield where he was taken for injuries received in a truck accident early Friday morning. Mr. Madson struck a concrete abutment on a bridge during heavy fog suffering severe facial lacerations, fractured ribs and a shattered knee cap. He is out of the oxygen tent but is still a mighty sick man.

A deal was completed here this week whereby Mr. and Mrs. Lester Beeck became owners of the Smith Grocery and Service Station located in the northwest part of Fulda. Beecks recently moved to Fulda from Hoffman, MN where they farmed the past few years.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Behr and family will move back to Fulda where Charles will manage the Anderson Lumber Yard. Current manager Mr. Roger Wulf has been transferred to Milford, Iowa.

St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church is under renovations. With the building of the originally structure being in 1911, the decorative stencilling taking place in 1919, and a re-decorate in the fifties, it was evident the church was due for extensive work. At present, the Blessed Sacrament rests in the school building where Mass is celebrated daily. It is hoped the work on the Church over-looking the lake will be completed in time for the celebration of Easter.

Darrel Bruns has owned and operated the elevator in Iona since 1977 and is know as one of the friendliest elevator men around. Stop in at the Bruns Elevator Co. in Iona for early morning coffee!

Pat and Janice Pechacek are the parents of a daughter, Janel, born January 2nd. Grandparents include Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Eshleman and Lee Pechacek.

Bishop Harrington visited the area this week.

Lyle and Betty Lee enjoy feeding and watch wildlife near their home. This year they have seen seven or eight red squirrels as well as an albino squirrel.

With school two hours late on Monday due to a weather delay, youngsters enjoyed the snow piles at the Beth and Jack Kaufman home including a frozen icicle treat.

Alliant Energy undergoes changes; Fuerstenberg, Boom and Greenfield retire and a new payment site will be located at Maynard’s.

Ernie Davis celebrates his 85th birthday.
