Thursday, Nov. 19, 1959

An explosion and fire at the Municipal Power Plant  knocked out the electric power to most of Worthington on Monday as a cold wave plummeted temperatures to below zero. A civil defense emergency was declared as officials feared power would be out for more than 24 hours. The power, which was restored by Tuesday morning at 6:35, knocked out furnaces, ranges, and refrigerators. Many residents took refuge in downtown buildings which were heated by steam.

Bone chilling temperatures coupled with 3 inches of snow hampered corn pickers in the area last Thursday, November 12th. The temperature last Friday dipped to -12 and on Monday remained at -10, but the worse enemy was the snow leaving tractors and corn pickers stuck in drifts. The early fall kept the farmers out of the fields as well with heavy rains and wet fields.

A deal was completed here on Saturday when Mr. and Mrs. Willis Samp of Kinbrae bought the Fulda Hotel from Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kuehl. The Samp’s will take possession this weekend. The Kuehls, who purchased the hotel from Mrs. Pearl Meyers in 1953, now live in Minneapolis.

Baskets of red roses added to the altar of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dundee made a beautiful setting for the marriage of Gertrude Carlson and Gerald Schwarz on November 14th. The Rev. Joseph Donahue officiated the double-ring ceremony.

Mr. and Mrs. Garland Nelson are the parents of a daughter, Nancy born on November 13th.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Worden will celebrate their Golden Wedding Anniversary on November 22nd with an open house at the American Legion Hall.

Everett A. Snider passed away on November 3rd at the age of 82 years old. Mr. Snider was the brother Adrian Snider of Fulda.

Wednesday, Nov. 22, 1989

Roger Deuschle is one of the Fulda Firemen learning to remove a steering column from a vehicle after a crash. The firemen attended the Emergency Workshop hosted by the Slayton Fire Department on Monday night.

The Fulda Cub Scouts collected over 800 cans and boxes of food for the Fulda Food Shelf thanks to the generosity of the residents of Fulda.

The Fulda Elementary School had some important visitors on Monday as Paul Bunyan, Sinbad the Sailor, Robinson Crusoe, Johnny Appleseed, Ali Baba all made an appearance during “Dress as your favorite book character” day. Students and staff enjoyed the story telling as well as donning their own costumes.

Citizens of Tomorrow include Jacki, Adam and Tim Hein, Matthew, Eric, Joseph and Mickey Behr and Cindy, Jamie and Bruce Beeck.

Celebrating birthdays at Maple Lawn Nursing Home this month are Evelyn Utz, Mary Kratzke, Emma Hostetler, Johanna Czepa and Ray Reith.

Merrel L. Duncan passed away at the age of 73 on November 16th following a lengthy illness.

Marie Phernetton, 4-month-old daughter of Robert and Becky (Hadler) Phernetton, passed away on November 13th. Marie was the great-granddaughter of Marie Kahle of Fulda.

Included in the Fulda High School Senior Profiles this week are Stacie Dierks, Elyse Gunderman, and Anita Miller.

The Fulda School Board discussed the developmental assets survey results showing students range at or above the national average in most assets.

Blue Basket Quilting opens shop in Fulda with Sue Clarke and Grace Meier manning the Long Arm Sewing Machine.  Sue and Grace have turned the love of quilting into an heirloom business.

Second Grade students at the Fulda Elementary School will present The Tale of Arthur and the Thanksgiving Turkey for their parents on Wednesday.

“Seven Brides for Seven Brothers” presented this past weekend by Fulda High School students.

Santa Claus is coming to Fulda on Saturday!

Cory and Lisa Paplow announce the birth of their daughter, Emily born November 17th. Grandparents are Duane and Sheryl Leopold and Wayne and Sheila Paplow.

Kari and Brian Ackerman announce the birth of a son, Tyler born November 12th. Grandparents are Kevin and Sue Schweigert and Bruce and Kathy Ackerman.

Sandra Zeiszler and Charles Clausen were married on July 24th at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Plymouth, Minnesota.

Lydia Behr passed away at the age of 93 years old on November 18th.

Loren Struble passed away on November 10th at the age of 81 years old.

Margaret Knox passed away on November 12th at her home at the age of 105 years old.

Janis and Don Heintz to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary over the Thanksgiving Holiday with family.
