Thursday, Nov. 8, 1973

A trip to town to attend a parent-teacher conference ended in tragedy Mrs. Arnold (LaVonne) Henning when her car collided with a pickup truck and fertilizer trailer. Mrs. Henning suffered head injuries and died en route to the Slayton hospital. The drive of the pickup and  Mrs. Henning’s daughter (one of eight children) received minor injuries.

Village elections are complete.

In Avoca there were no filings for mayor but Bernard Olson received 21 write-in votes and the present mayor, Verner Granquist, who did not re-file, received 18 write-ins. The two trustee positions were won by the incumbents, Frank Voss, 49 votes, and Marion Lindberg, 35 votes.

Dundee reported 31 voters at the polls. Mrs. Leo Hogan receiving 31 votes, Francis Knot, 30, and Willard Karschnik, 30.

Fulda’s mayor contest proved to be quite interesting with Clifford Suedbeck winning with 261 votes. Lucille Gerber had 202 votes. Winning council seats were Roland Miller, 308 votes, and Bill Fuerstenberg, 365 votes. Jerry Hoff was elected constable with 329 votes over Dale McKenzie 136.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo F. Clark announce the engagement of their daughter, Sherri to Richard Boehnke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Boehnke. No date has been set.

Mr. and Mrs. Roger Schwenn are the parents of a son, Jeffrey, born November 2nd. Grandparents include Mr. and Mrs. Rich Gilberston and Mr. and Mrs. Vergil Schween.

Edward Jorgensen passed away October 31, 1973 at the age of 79 years old.

John Pratt passed away at the age of 56 on Saturday at the Sand Point, Idaho hospital.

LaVonne Henning passed away on November 2nd at the age of 48 years old.

Robert Wisdorf passed away at the age of 43 years old on November 5th.

Murray County P.O.W.’s honored at a banquet at the VFW in Slayton on Sunday evening. The nine servicemen honored were Evertt Oolman, Francis E. Drealan, Jack Larson, Franklin J. (Speed) Schully, Matt Schu, Lenerd Eggink, Norbert O. DePauw, John H. Reiter, and Raymond (Shorty) B. Noethe.

The Fulda City Council accepted a garbage bid with Grothe Garbage Service.

‘Maroon Friday’ will take place on November 18th when Minnesota State Patrol will concentrate on drivers speed, seat belt usage and DWI violations.

The City of Fulda and the Fulda Public High School will join together to educate students in the eighth grade level on money saving home energy conservation.

Ron and Cheryl Pierson are the parents of a boy, Derek. Grandparents include Art and Darlene Sandhurst and Don and Ida Pierson.

Janet and Randy Lockwood are proud to announce the arrival of their daughter, Heather on November 2nd. Grandparents are Roger and Joanne Halbur and Harold and June Lockwood.

The Fulda Raider High School Marching Band will hold it’s Seventh Annual Chili Supper November 9th.

Karmel Holinka of Fulda has been named the State Women of Today March of Dimes Program Manager.

It was twenty years ago when Tom Buesing got his first ‘taste’ of the food business at Valhalla Steak House- today he has his own business located in the Corral Supper Club building – or, as Tom prefers to call it ‘T-Tommys Corral’!

Fulda High School first quarter honor roll hold 208 names of local students.

Murray County Junior Olympic Volleyball tryouts will be held November 21st for those girls 16 to 18 years old.

Bishop Bernard Harrington has been named to head Winona Diocese.

Arthur Mathias passed away at the age of 76 years old on November 6th.

Florence Lober passed away on November 2nd at the age of 90 years old.

Anna McCoy passed away at the age of 87 years old on November 8th.

The Fulda City Mayor race showed John Maertens having 457 votes and Mary Magnus 205 votes. City Council Ken Clarke 403 votes, Dave Thiner 390 votes and Jan Wehking 9. The vote on Question 1 – Sunday Liquor had 388 votes in favor and 263 against.

The Fulda School District 505 vote showed Cheryl Janssen receiving 525 votes, Darryl Sandhurst 620 votes, and Douglas Stewart 558 votes.
