Rabbits edge Coyotes in double-overtime thriller

Holding a big advantage in two key statistical categories — turnovers and free throws — the Wabasso Rabbits prevailed with an exciting double-overtime victory over the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes in a non-conference high school boys’ basketball game at Fulda on Monday, December 23.

The final score was 99-95, as both teams put up a lot of points. The score was tied at 74 at the end of regulation and at 84 at the end of the first overtime before Wabasso outscored HL-O/F 15-11 in the second extra period.

“Overall, this was a good high school basketball game with a lot of clutch shooting by both teams,” Coyotes head coach Colby Pack said. “The difference in the game was turnovers and free throws, and we also didn’t make enough plays defensively to win.”

Wabasso turned the ball over 13 times and was 20-for-23 (87 percent) from the free-throw line. HL-O/F had 21 turnovers and was just 4-for-12 (33 percent) from the foul line.

However, the Coyotes did make 15 3-pointers. Zach Thier was 7-for-16 from behind the arc and finished with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists.

Eli Fest led HL-O/F with 30 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds and three steals, while Tyler Madison also scored in double figures with 18 points to go along with 13 rebounds and six assists.
