Fulda vs. HLO
The Fulda boys opened up their subsection tournament play on Thursday night when they hosted Heron Lake-Okabena. Fulda came into the game seeded #8, while HL-O came in seeded #9. After falling behind early, the Raiders came out strong in the second half and went on a long run to secure the victory and advance with a 63-62 victory.
Leighton Gehl led the Raiders with 23 points, 7 assists, and 5 steals. Dalton Slinger added 20 points and 5 assists. Matthias Kunerth chipped in with 8 points and 11 rebounds, and Payton Marquardt recorded 5 steals.
The game started with HL-O coming out strong and jumping out to a quick 6-0 lead, before the Raiders were forced to take a timeout. The Raiders got their offense going as Gehl was able to attack to the basket for a few easy layups, which then forced HL-O to focus a little more on the drive. This allowed Gehl to find his shooters – Slinger, Kunerth, and Cory Renneke – open and they were able to knock down shots. But HL-O withstood the Fulda charge back into the game and went on another run of their own, as they were able to get into the lane and work the offensive glass for putbacks. The Wildcats extended their lead out to 11, forcing another Raider timeout. Coming out of timeout, Levi Spittle and Gehl were able to get to the basket – with Gehl knocking down 2 3’s, as well – to get the Wildcat lead down to 6 at halftime, as HL-O led 35-29.
