In a pair of competitive high school baseball games at Slayton last Thursday (May 2), the host Murray County Central Rebels emerged with two Red Rock Conference victories over Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda.
In the first game of the varsity doubleheader, the Rebels stretched a narrow 2-0 lead into a final 6-0 win by crossing the plate four times in the bottom of the sixth inning. Before that, Coyote pitcher Eli Fest had tossed four straight scoreless innings, including eight strikeouts, keeping HL-O / Fulda in contention.
Fest struck out the side in both the second and third frames as he struck out six straight Rebels after surrendering two runs in the bottom of the first. A leadoff single, a Coyote error, another single and a sacrifice fly RBI produced MCC’s two runs to start the game.
Meanwhile, the Coyotes were being stymied by the sharp pitching performance of MCC ace Nate Everson, who twirled a three-hit shutout.
Senior shortstop Eli Becker rapped a first-inning single and sophomore catcher Matt Madsen cracked a leadoff single in the second frame and hit a one-out single for the Coyotes in the seventh inning.
