Lyn Ramerth and Janet Noerenberg have discovered a new, but very relaxing, hobby that they are thoroughly enjoying. They are making lawn ornaments from rhubarb leaves.
Noerenberg was out for a walk late in the spring of 2017 when she passed by the home of Cindy Bullerman. In Cindy’s yard was a display of colorful lawn ornaments – in the shape of leaves. “I thought to myself ‘I’ve got to learn how to do this,’” Noerenberg shared.
Noerenberg told Lyn Ramerth about the leaves and the two of them found out that Therese Bekx knew how to make them and had done so with great success.
Bekx, Noerenberg and Ramerth then made plans for Bekx to teach the other two ladies how to create the gorgeous leaves. Each of the three ladies made one, with Bekx providing step-by-step instructions.
Rhubarb leaves are used to create the veining, texture and shape of the concrete leaves. Noerenberg and Ramerth shared the process of creating the ornaments. A rhubarb leaf is spread out on a work surface and covered with cement. “It’s really important to get the right consistency when you are mixing the cement,” Noerenberg stressed. “It can’t be too crumbly and it can’t be too wet.”
