Renee Dorpinghaus receives painting of St. Gabriel’s Church

June 2, 2018 was a special day for Delano and Renee Dorpinghaus. On that day, Pensacola, Florida was the site of the marriage of their grandson, Raymond to, his bride, Naomi. The bride and groom had decided to give gifts to the oldest people attending the wedding. Grandma Renee received a painting by Raymond of St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in Fulda, complete with Fulda Lake and swimming wood ducks.  Grandpa Delano received a painted portrait of himself.

Recently, Renee was visiting with Donna Lenards and showed her the painting of the church. Lenards encouraged her to stop by the office of the Fulda Free Press and show the staff the painting. “The painting is deserving of a story in the newspaper,” Lenards encouraged Renee.

On Thursday morning, Delano and Renee sat at their kitchen table and began talking about the artistic talents of grandson Raymond.  He is the son of their daughter, Mary, and husband, Brian, St. Cloud, Minnesota. Mary and Brian are also the parents of Nick.

“Even as a young child, Raymond would be artfully creative using the Lego® blocks,” Renee commented. “He used a lot of pony and perler beads to make a number of different items. He was always creating something.”

When Delano celebrated his 60th birthday, Ray was seven years of age. His card to Grandpa was a drawing that included a tractor, dog, cat, pig, and barn. Each of those five individual objects on the card had the number 60 drawn into them. Ray had written instructions on the card for Delano to attempt to find the hidden 60’s.
