Once again clearing the high jump bar at five-feet, 11 inches, Fulda High School junior Sam Cheadle positioned himself among the top performers in that event last Thursday (May 31), while competing in the high-caliber Section 3A track and field meet at Montevideo’s Thunder Hawk Stadium.
Advancing as a qualifier from the East Sub-Section Meet (held in Redwood Falls on May 24), Cheadle represented the first-year pairing of Heron Lake-Okabena and Fulda in fine fashion, placing fourth among a total of 24 competing high jumpers at Montevideo.
Only 14 of the jumpers cleared the opening height of 5-5 and just 10 of those made 5-7.
Cheadle was one of six athletes to clear the bar at 5-9, assuring himself of a section medal (top six). The bar moved to 5-11 and five of the remaining competitors eventually made that height, striving to earn advancement to next week’s Class A State Meet at Hamline University in Saint Paul.
Cheadle was close to making 6-1, but he was one of four jumpers who went out at that height. Only Tyl Woelber, a senior from Pipestone Area, cleared the bar at 6-1. Woelber, the defending state high jump champion, continued on and won the event with a height of 6-6.
On the basis of misses, Cheadle placed fourth — ahead of Lac qui Parle Valley / Dawson-Boyd junior Thomas Daniels, who was fifth (5-11) — but behind Montevideo junior Christian Riley and LQPV/D-B senior Joe Anyasike, who each cleared 5-11 on fewer misses than Cheadle.
