Senior Sam Cheadle continued his season-long dominance of the high jump at area high school track and field meets last Thursday (May 16) when cleared a new personal-best height of six-feet, one inch (6-1) at Slayton and became the 2019 Red Rock Conference champion in that event.
Cheadle was the only one of 13 competitors to make 5-10, giving him first place. He then went on to sail over 6-1 for the first time in his stellar career. Joshua Raak, a Southwest Minnesota Christian / Edgerton senior, was second (5-8), while Mountain Lake Area / Comfrey sophomore Ethan Nickel placed third (5-6).
“Sam had another great day in the high jump,” praised Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda head boys’ track and field coach Brad Holinka. “He won the conference title in convincing fashion and set a new PR (personal record) by clearing 6-1, which is a really good performance.”
A total of 16 Coyote boys contributed to HL-O / Fulda’s scoring in the eight-team meet, including a team-leading 10.5 points from senior Gabe Spittle, 10 from Cheadle and seven from sophomore Zach Thier.
Spittle placed second in the pole vault (10-6), seventh in the 400-meter dash (57.78) and tied for eighth in the 200 (25.95).
