A pair of first-place performances by senior leaper Sam Cheadle highlighted Heron Lake-Okabena boys’ track and field scoring at the four-team Coyote Invitational last Tuesday, April 16. The meet was held at Murray County Central’s track in Slayton.
Cheadle was HL-O / Fulda’s top scorer in the quadrangular as he tallied 17 points by winning both the high jump (6-0) and triple jump (39-4) events. He also placed second in the long jump (18-2.5) and ran a leg on the Coyotes’ second-place 4 x 200-meter relay team.
The meet was scored 6-4-3-2-1 for the top five individual places and relays were scored 6-4-2 for the first three finishing teams.
MCC racked up a total of 94 points to win the boys’ division, while HL-O / Fulda scored 67 points and finished second, just ahead of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s total of 66. Westbrook-Walnut Grove / Red Rock Central was fourth with 44 points.
Senior Gabe Spittle contributed 13 points for the Coyotes with a first-place performance in the pole vault (10-6) and a pair of third in the dashes, running the 100 in 12.27 and clocking a time of 25.32 in the 200. Spittle ran the leadoff leg on HLOF’s 4 x 200, which ran a season-fastest time of 1:45.09.
