A season of highlights and lows, triumphs and adversity came to an end for the Fulda Raider Girls’ Basketball team last week. It was a season of great change for the Raiders, and a young group of girls was forced to grow up in a hurry off, and especially on, the court. This Raider season saw the transition from legendary two-time State Champion Coach Gregg Slaathaug and his long-time Assistant Jess Hogan, to Sam Voss, Jonathon Curry, and Marquis Madison. And the season ended with the last Fulda Raider Girls’ home game as the transition begins to the HLO-Fulda Coyote era next fall.
Fulda started the season on a 3-3 stretch, alternating wins over Heron Lake-Okabena, Westbrook-Walnut Grove, and Ellsworth with competitive losses to Lakeview and Red Rock Central as well as another loss to Hills-Beaver Creek. Unfortunately in game 7, adversity hit the Raiders, as not one, but two players were lost for the season against Murray County Central. Sophomore reserve Forward Brittany Lais and Senior starting Point Guard Emily Schroer sustained knee injuries in the loss to the Rebels. Emily’s injury hurt in particular with her experience, and how well she was playing to start the year. Before her injury, she was averaging 13.5 points, 12.0 rebounds, nearly 3 steals and over 2 assists per game. The injury meant more opportunities and also more responsibilities for the girls on the team.
