In preparation for observing Veterans Day 2016, Sergeant Blaine Collins of the Pipestone National Guard, A1-125 FA (field artillery unit) visited with students at St. Paul’s Lutheran School on Wednesday afternoon.
Teacher Joyce Den Hartog explained to the students, in grades kindergarten through fourth grade, that Sergeant Collins is a veteran. “He is here to tell you what his job is as a soldier with the Minnesota National Guard,” she stated.
“What do you all think that I do as a soldier with the National Guard?” Sergeant Collins asked the students. There responses included ‘fight’, ‘train’, and ‘shoot tanks and cannons”.
“You have some good answers, but I will tell you about what I do in my job for the National Guard. I was 17 years old when I joined the National Guard. I went to Fort Sill in Oklahoma for my basic training and physical readiness. When I was done, they gave me these,” he said as he pulled his dog tags from around his neck and handed them to the students to see. “These are called dog tags.
