Last week, nearly 50 students took part in the Totus Tuus program at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church. Four college-aged students were on hand to lead both the day-time elementary program from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. and the evening high school program, from 7:30 -9:30 p.m.
The expression “Totus Tuus” is Latin for Totally Yours. It was the motto of the late Pope John Paul II, who dedicated his life mission to drawing closer to Christ through a great devotion and love of Jesus’ mother, Mary. The elementary students focused on the five luminous mysteries (Luminous, meaning ‘light’: Stories in the Bible when the Divinity of Christ is made gloriously apparent.) Day 1 focused on the Baptism of our Lord (Matthew 3:13-17); Day 2 focused on Christ’s first miracle at the Wedding at Cana (John 2); Day 3 focused on the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7). On Day 4, the students learned more about the Transfiguration of Christ (Matthew 17) & finally, on Day 5, the students learned about Christ’s Presence in the Eucharist (John 6:6). The learning of these great stories from the Bible was combined with fun and games/ music and daily Mass, with the students taking an active part.
