Veteran Walter Ruesch i saluting the flag at Maple Lawn Senior Care Center.

He was able to watch recently as a large crane was brought in to change the finial at the top of the flag pole. At the same time, a new rope was installed on the flag pole. Shortly after this work was done, a new flag was raised to the top of the flag pole. Ruesch was delighted to be able to watch the whole process and, as a veteran who served three years defending the flag of the United States of America, he was deeply moved. He said, “What’s a man to do? I saluted that flag. I thought to myself, if anyone is watching, they know where the loyalties and pride lies. Honoring that flag is the reason we have the rights to live as we do. We need to honor it and what it stands for on a day-to-day basis. We live in a wonderful country kept free by those who serve in the military and those who continue to work to make sure that freedom still reigns.”
