After not playing a single game in the entire month of April, due to this year’s extended winter, Heron Lake-Okabena / Fulda finally opened its high school baseball season with a Red Rock Conference double header at Adrian last Tuesday on May Day.

The Coyotes gave up eight runs in the first inning, but played well over the next 11 innings and ended up with a split against the Dragons. Adrian won the first six-inning contest by a final score of 10-5 before HLOF received a stellar complete-game pitching performance by freshman Eli Fest and prevailed with a 2-1 victory in the nightcap.

Fest walked just one batter in six innings on the mound, while scattering six hits. The accurate-throwing lefty struck out seven Dragons and was helped by an error-free Coyote defense.

“We played good defense in the second game and Eli pitched a great game, only allowing one walk,” summed up third-year HL-O head coach Chad Knutson. “We scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning and that was enough to win what turned out to be a very well-played high school baseball game.”
