Sparked by three straight 3-pointers by Zach Thier to begin the second half, the Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyotes put together a big rally against the MACCRAY Wolverines in the season-opening boys’ basketball game last Friday afternoon (November 29) at the Wabasso Tipoff Tournament in Wabasso.
The Coyotes trailed 49-34 at halftime and rallied to take a 74-73 lead in the closing minutes, but MACCRAY — representing the communities of Maynard, Clara City and Raymond — prevailed with an exciting 81-79 victory.
HL-O/F was scheduled to play Cleveland in the second day of the tournament on Saturday, but inclement weather forced that game to be canceled.
“This was a good game for us to begin the season,” Coyotes head coach Colby Pack said. “MACCRAY is expected to be one of the top teams in the northern half of our section and they really played well in the first half. We battled back nicely in the second half and gave ourselves a chance to win at the end, so I’m very proud of our kids.”
Thier, who scored 19 points and pulled down six rebounds, hit three consecutive 3-pointers in the first two minutes of the second half to trigger a 14-3 Coyotes run that trimmed a 15-point halftime deficit (49-34) to just four points (52-48) and forced a MACCRAY timeout at the 14:25 mark.
