Boys claim golf Conference championship – Girls finish in fourth after four day tournament

A beautiful, warm day greeted golfers for the final installment of the four day Red Rock Conference meet held at Worthington on Tuesday, May 21.

The Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Coyote boys team earned the Conference championship, while the girls came in fourth.

The conference golf meet takes place over four days, with all four days counting in the team total.

For the individual portion of the tournament, two of the first three scores count, in addition to the fourth and final day. This gives an opportunity to miss a one of the days of the tournament or to drop their highest score of the first three days.

The golf competition continues, leading up to the state tournament. The sub-section tournament will be on Wednesday, May 22, with Sections scheduled for the following Wednesday, May 29.

Boys earn Conference Championship

HLOF cruised to championship, shooting 1345 over the four day tournament. The Coyotes had tour golfers in the top eight at the conclusion of the tournament.

Medalist honors went to Jack Pierson of Murray County Central, with a three day total of 233.

Coyote Cory Renneke (242) finished in second place individually. Payton Marquardt and Joe Fischer (both with 248) were tied for fourth over the tournament. Tyler Madison finished in eighth, shooting 265. Ethan Koep (283) and Isaiah Schmid (286) were also golfing for the Coyotes in the tournament.

Adrian was second in the team standings with 1515, followed by Westbrook-Walnut Grover (1519), Southwest Christian-Edgerton (1526), Red Rock Central (1595) and Hills-Beaver Creek (1606).MCC and Mountain Lake Area were incomplete.

Girls earn fourth place

The Coyote girls were led by senior Lexy Ruesch to their fourth place finish in the tournament. The ladies shot 1758 to capture fourth.

Ruesch finished with a three day total of 217, narrowly missing a top ten finish. She was followed by sisters Elly (319) and Meakin Bang (326), and senior Samantha Freking (340). Kelli Renneke and Arianna Stearns also participated in some of the tournament dates for the Coyotes.

MCC Rebel Abby Hammon was the ladies medalist, finishing with a low score of 240 over three days.

Hammon led the MCC girls to the team title, carding 1566 over the four days. Adrian was second with 1667, and WWG third with 1728. After HLOF’s 1758, the team scoring was completed with MLA-C (2007), HBC (2026), and RRC (2059). SWC did not have a complete team in the tournament.
